5/19/05 Remote Enrollment Centers for FAST, SENTRI, and NEXUS passes House Hurdle:
Yesterday an amendment to the House DHS Authorization bill was introduced by Representative Slaughter (D-NY) to require DHS to create four remote enrollment centers for the FAST, SENTRI, and NEXUS programs. This amendment passed the House by a voice vote. Given that the Senate does not at this time plan to act on a DHS Authorization bill, proponents will have to find another vehicle for the issue in the Senate.
This is an important issue on which PACE (/) will continue to work.

U.S. Customs & Border Protection now has an online application process for NEXUS enrollment. For more information, see the news release below. Similarly, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) indicates that applicants can now apply for a membership electronically, through the Global Enrollment System (GOES) by visiting the NEXUS website at www.nexus.gc.ca and clicking on Application - thence apply on line. NEXUS is designed to expedite the border clearance process for low-risk, approved travellers into Canada and the United States. In December 2006, the NEXUS program was harmonized and integrated into a single program. NEXUS members now have crossing privileges at any air, land, and marine ports of entry that supports the program by paying one fee. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) are cooperating in this joint venture to simplify border crossings for members, while enhancing security.
